Inauguration of the Cancer Prevention Centre at the Léon Bérard Centre
The Léon Bérard Cancer Center, the leading cancer center in Lyon and the Rhône-Alpes region, inaugurated its new building dedicated to cancer prevention and screening, as well as research on environmental factors, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025: the Professor Thierry Philip Cancer Prevention Center. This is the first institution in France to bring together, on a single site, preventive clinical activities, health promotion initiatives, and research teams working on the main cancer risk factors, including those related to the environment and lifestyle.
Inaugurated in the presence of state representatives, local elected officials, and healthcare professionals, the new building, named the “Professor Thierry Philip Cancer Prevention Center,” bears the name of the former director general of the Léon Bérard Cancer Center (1989-2009). He was the first to integrate prevention initiatives within the institution.
Today, it is estimated that 40% of diagnosed cancers, representing nearly 1,200 new cases per day, are linked to factors that can be addressed through prevention. This new Prevention Center aims to provide guidance on understanding these factors and empowering individuals to better manage them. It offers a full range of prevention methods: primary prevention, but also secondary prevention through screening, and tertiary prevention through the prevention of relapses and second cancers.
In accordance with the recommendations issued by the National Cancer Institute’s Ten-Year Cancer Control Strategy 2021-2031, and in line with the regional health initiatives undertaken by the Regional Health Agency, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and the Lyon Metropolitan Area, the Léon Bérard Center has placed prevention at the heart of its 2026-2030 Medical and Scientific Project (MSP). “With the opening of the Prevention Center, we want to facilitate access for as many people as possible to structured screening programs (colorectal, breast, lung, gynecological, melanoma), integrate prevention into personalized care and post-cancer programs, and also use artificial intelligence and digital technology to facilitate cancer prevention and detection,” explains Professor Jean-Yves Blay, Director General of the Léon Bérard Center.
The objective is also to continue developing research programs on the environmental and genetic causes of cancer and to explore new communication methods to better reach younger generations.
The new Prevention Center at the Léon Bérard Center offers personalized consultations to support each individual according to their needs and situation: cancer screening consultations (gynecological, colorectal, and dermatological) and prevention or support consultations (**oncogenetics, dietetics, occupational cancers, post-cancer care, prevention for caregivers and people at increased risk of cancer, etc.).
The Léon Bérard Center received support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region (€600,000), the French State through the National Fund for Regional Planning and Development (€500,000), and the Lyon Metropolitan Area (€150,000) for the construction of this building, which has a total surface area of 1,351 m², spread over seven floors and a rooftop terrace.
